Masseter Tox
About masseter tox at HoneMD
Masseter tox is a targeted neurotoxin treatment that relaxes the masseter muscle - the large, powerful chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw - to slim, define, and contour the lower face. Over weeks, the muscle reduces in size, the jaw narrows, and the lower face transitions into a tapered, V-shaped silhouette.
At HoneMD - serving Torrance and Huntington Beach - masseter tox is one of our most-requested contouring treatments. It does two things at once: cosmetic slimming and functional relief. Patients with a clenching habit, TMJ pain, or chronic morning jaw tightness often report symptom reduction alongside the contouring result.
The treatment is a few units in the right place - not a face full of neurotoxin. Our injectors are trained to identify the safe injection corridor inside the masseter muscle that avoids the smile-lifting fibers, which is the difference between a sharp jawline and a flat, asymmetric smile.
Who this treatment is for
- You have a wide, boxy, or square jawline you'd like to slim
- You want a snatched, V-shaped lower-face contour without surgery
- You clench, grind, or wake up with jaw tightness
- You've been told you have hypertrophic masseters
- You're planning jawline filler or chin filler and want the muscle slimmed first so the bone definition reads cleaner
The HoneMD approach
Masseter tox is dose-dependent. Too little, no slimming. Too much or in the wrong plane, the smile flattens. We palpate the muscle in repose and at full clench to map the bulkiest fibers, then dose 25–50 units per side depending on muscle mass and contouring goal. The injection corridor is the lower posterior masseter - well below the smile-lifting fibers - and we keep the depth deep, in the muscle belly, not on the surface.
We use the same neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify, Letybo) used in our wrinkle relaxer treatments - product selection depends on patient history, dosing math, and how long-lasting you want the result.

- Relieves clenching, bruxism, and TMJ-related jaw tightness

- Pairs naturally with chin filler, jawline filler, or a Nefertiti lift for complete lower-face sculpting
- No downtime, no surgery, no anesthesia
What to expect
Consultation (10–15 min): we palpate both masseters in repose and at clench, photograph baseline, and map the dosing pattern. Discussion of cosmetic vs. functional goals - the dose differs slightly.
Treatment (10–15 min): 2–3 injection points per side, deep into the muscle belly. No numbing required. Most patients describe it as a brief pinch.
First 1–2 weeks: functional relief begins - clenching feels harder, jaw tightness eases.
4–6 weeks: visible slimming. The muscle reduces in size and the lower face begins to taper.
8–12 weeks: peak contouring result. The V-line shape is fully visible.
Maintenance: every 4–6 months for most clients. Over time, with consistent treatment, the muscle stays smaller and the contour deepens - maintenance intervals often extend.
Pricing
From $299 per treatment for new clients. Pricing scales with units - typical dosing is 50–100 units total depending on muscle mass and goal. We confirm units and price before treatment begins. Know the plan. Know the price.
Aftercare
- Avoid lying down for 4 hours post-injection
- Skip facial massage or pressure on the jaw for 24 hours
- Skip exercise, alcohol, and heat (saunas, hot tubs) for 24 hours
- Mild swelling or tenderness is normal and resolves within hours
FAQ
How long does masseter tox last?
4–6 months for most clients. With consistent treatment, the muscle stays smaller and intervals typically extend over time.
Will it change my smile?
Not when injected correctly. The safe injection corridor is well below the smile-lifting fibers. The risk only exists if a provider injects too high or too superficial - which is why injector experience matters here.
Can I still chew normally?
Yes. Your other chewing muscles compensate. Some patients notice mild fatigue when eating very tough food in the first week or two; this resolves quickly.
How many units will I need?
Typically 50–100 units total (25–50 per side) depending on muscle bulk and whether your goal is cosmetic slimming, TMJ relief, or both.
Does it help with TMJ pain?
Often yes. Relaxing the masseter reduces clenching force, which reduces tension on the TMJ. Patients with TMJ disorder frequently report symptom relief within the first 2 weeks.
Does it hurt?
Minimal. A few brief pinches, no numbing required.
How is masseter tox different from jawline filler?
Masseter tox slims the muscle. Jawline filler adds structure to the bone. They solve opposite problems and pair beautifully - slim the muscle first, then sharpen the bone line.
What happens if I stop?
The muscle slowly returns to baseline over 4–6 months. The shape is not permanent, but the longer you maintain treatment, the smaller the muscle stays between sessions.
